GameCity International Videogame Festival

GameCity needed a site which could promote this year's festival, provide the platform to support festivals past and future, and to support their other, year-round, activities.

When GameCity approached us at the start of 2009 they knew that they needed to radically overhaul their web presence, but they weren't sure what their next steps should be.

Over their first three years the festival had grown into one of the most important events on the videogame calendar, and they now had a wealth of history and material they wanted to be able to present online. They also wanted a platform to help them achieve their growing ambitions for the future, year-round and online.

First, we helped them turn their ideas into a concrete and implementable plan. We worked with them to build a domain model which captured the data they had, and provided a solid foundation for the future.

Next, we began work on the system. Built on the Ruby on Rails framework, we were able to build it piece by piece, quickly launching a new version of the site featuring a blog and mailing list management (integrating with Campaign Monitor), followed by support for videos and events, complete with iCal, Outlook and Google Calendar support, personalised calendars for GameCitizens.

Because of our iterative process we were able to re-prioritise as GameCity's needs changed over time and new possibilities emerged. Flickr and Twitter integration, for example, were added as GameCity began to explore new ways of talking to their audience.
